    “Die Einrichtung des Cyberspace, der Umgebung für Kommunikation und Denken menschlicher Gruppierungen, wird im nächsten Jahrhundert eine der größten ästhetischen und politischen Herausforderungen sein.”

    Was der französische Medienphilosoph Pierre Levy Mitte der 1990er Jahre prophezeite, ist heute Lebenswirklichkeit. Immer mehr Menschen streben täglich ins Netz und basteln sich dort mit Weblogs und in Communities eine virtuelle Identität. Jahrhundertealte Denkmuster der Gutenberg-Galaxie werden durch die Digitalisierung auf den Kopf gestellt, und die rasenden Geschwindigkeiten der neuen Medien verwirren unsere Sinne – im basisdemokratischen Internet scheint nichts mehr das zu sein, was es einmal war.

    Dabei ist keineswegs entschieden, welche Pläne sich auf der Baustelle des babylonisch wuchernden Cyberspace durchsetzen werden: Ob etwa in Zukunft noch frei zugängliche Paläste gebaut werden, die der “Weisheit der Vielen” (James Surowiecki) und dem “Reichtum der Netzwerke” (Yochai Benkler) gewidmet sind, wie die Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia und die Bewegung der Free and Open Source Software. Ob wir durch solche Beispiele vielleicht wirklich klügere, schönere, bessere Menschen werden, die gemeinsam eine ökollektive Intelligenz” (Pierre Levy) und eine bereichernde Volkskultur des “Remixing” (Lawrence Lessig) hervorbringen. Und welche rechtlichen und medialen Vorkehrungen dafür getroffen werden müssen, denn das “Wissen als Medieneffekt” (Joseph Vogl) kommt nur als Ergebnis eines komplexen Zusammenspiels von Technologien, Zeichen, Institutionen und Darstellungsformen zustande.
    Oder wird der staatliche Kampf gegen Terror, Kriminalität und bisweilen auch Meinungsfreiheit doch eher eine graue Kontrollgesellschaft der Angst errichten, vielleicht sogar zu einer Stasi 2.0 führen, wie es Datenschützer und Bürgerrechtler in Deutschland nennen? Auch wenn das Internet eine neue Chance für “Nischenprodukte statt Massenmarkt” (Chris Anderson) bietet: Große Medienkonzerne der ‘Creative Industries’ könnten das Netz ebenso gut in einen finsteren Kerker neofeudaler Abhängigkeiten verwandeln, mit undurchsichtigen und erpresserischen Geschäftsbedingungen und horrenden Urheberrechtsklagen, die auf ‘geistiges Eigentum’ pochen.

    pio is quoting a radio feature talking about the negative effects of the web 2.0.
    The internet – a so-called open and democratic universe – is as well a ‘big brother is watching you’-machine. Every movement is registered and we are not aware of how people (or rather big concerns!) are using this data.

    In the StadtBauWelt 176 (21dec2007) I read an interesting article from Rober Neuwirth. The title in German is ‘”… um nie wieder die Rückseite der Stadt zu verachten …”‘ (= ” … to never disregard the back side of the city …”).

    He clears out some myths.

    01 Slums typify human suffering
    In the favela people did live the American Dream from dishwasher to millionaire. Rocinha is an example for that. It started as Rocinha ( = “small farm”) and now it is a district where every house is connected to water and electricity supply. ‘Who is living in Rocnha has no reason to leave. You can get everything here.”

    02 Everyone who lives in a slum is poor
    Kibera (southwest of Nairobi, Kenia) has no water, no disposal or sanitation but a good working commercial structure: supermarkets, clinics, hair dressers, schools, telephone exchange, and churches.
    The inhabitants represent all social classes. Squatters are economically, politically and socially as assorted as any other residential zone.

    First precondition is a waranty against arbitrary expulsion. Because than they start to invest and make the best of it.
    Second precondition is an access to politics or public organs.

    In the same edition you can read an article about the contradictory geography of the favela (=’Die widersprüchjliche Geographie der Favela’) by Daniela Fabricius. She gives an overview on ‘Rocinha – the favela as a town’, ‘Providencia – Rio’s oldest favela’, and explains some facts like:
    gatos (=cats) < an inofficial and most of the time illegal branch connection to water, electricity, phone, TV >
    Vans (=shuttle bus) < the inofficial public transport > In Mexico City they displaced the public transport.

    I think these two articles show the independency of these home grown urban spaces. We shouldn’t show up there offering solutions for everything. We had this during colonization time and we know the end of the story.

  5. festival, website – Barcelona, Spain

    eme3 is a festival in which architecture interacts with other scientific and creative disciplines, adopting and reinterpreting their structures. eme3 is the environment expressed in cubic meters, where proposals, fruit of the research of space, interact with one another and who’s cohabitation in a common setting motors an exchange dynamic.

    eme3 is a provider of stages for expressing ideas, providing the creator with an actual interactive space and offering the promoter an appointment to explore emergent architecture.

  6. exposition – Karlsruhe, Germany

    The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics is featuring the AML, which is an interactive sound installation.
    It can be visited until the 6jan2009 and is located in the ‘Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie’ in Karlsruhe, Germany.

    It is about the changes sound makes in different spaces. Since it is interactive it is quite fun. AML stands for Architecture Music Laboratory.

  7. Fête de la Musique – France
    21st of June

    The French Minister of Culture decided in 1982 to make a Day for Music. It became the 21st of June. Now it already spread into more than 50 countries.

    If there is still nothing going on in your city go out on the 21st of June and play some music in the street. Animate passers-by to make some noise to wake up the good character of your city. If you are feeling unsure visit us on facebook.
